Sound Library

Since the start of course I have saved all the sounds I’ve ever recorded in a very unorganised sound library. The road consists of a lot of walking and I knew I had loads of recording of people walking on different surfaces, grass, gravel and so on. Although it took me awhile to find them I found some really good recordings I did in the summer of someone walking on gravel, I also came across a really good atmos of a crow croaking which would be really useful at the start of the film.

Foley Sounds

I made a list of all the sounds I needed, I wanted to focus on all the sounds that I could be capture inside my bedroom through the art of Foley, I recorded all them inside my bedroom, as it is the furthest away from the main road to reduce the outside noises and interference. The first sound I focused on was the tree falling; I broke the sound into to its simplest form imaging every possible sound, which could be created when a tree falls.

1. Loads of Branches breaking all different sizes
2.  Large branch snap 
3. Squeak as the tree falls Loud thud as it hits the ground 
4. Stones hitting the floor 
5. Gust of wind as the tree falls

I grabbed a bunch of twigs all of different of sizes snapped them in fount of the microphone; I also dropped the twigs and snap them at different speeds to gather as different sounds which I could layer up in the edit. The thud I created using the bass drum on my drum kit. The squeak was created using an old door in my house.  The only sound I couldn’t get was of the gust of wind.

 Then began to record the rest of the Foley sounds like, i wanted to find an old trolley but in the end I decide to create the sound using foley.

Metal clunk	Gap in the radiator that I lifted off its hinges. Hitting metal bedframe with drum stick Hitting two pans together
Trunk opening and closing	Opening and closing a wooden box
Clock	Alarm clock
Fire	Flame of a candle and slowly crunching a plastic bag in hand
Damp clothing	Recently washed clothing that crunched up in front of the microphone
Water dripping	Recorded the tap in bathroom
Map on floor	Used vinyl sleeves as it’s a little heavier then paper
Sound of electricity	Wind up toy that I would then slow down in pro tools.
Static sound for broken radio	Electric shaver, slowed down on pro tools (not sure if this would work
Wheels	Rolled cans, jars and glasses across my bedroom floor at different speeds
Squeak	Recorded from an old door
Bottles rattling	Banged two bottles together
Rubbish shaking	Bag of rubbish, containing metal plastic, card and other materials
Metal shaking (trolley sound)	Filled a metal jar with coins then placed a metal coat hanger over the top and shake it.
